“A Novel with a Purpose” Upstate Cancer Physician Launches Novel at CSPA
Partnership Supports SC Ovarian Cancer Foundation and Cancer Research
[GREENVILLE, SC] – Cancer Survivors Park Alliance (CSPA), the South Carolina Ovarian Cancer Foundation (SCOCF), and Prisma Health will host a “novel” event to support cancer research and SCOCF – all in conjunction with September National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. The event will occur Sunday September 12, from 1 pm-3 pm at CSPA’s Center for Hope & Healing (CHH) in the Cancer Survivors Park (CSP) located at 52 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC. The
event will occur rain or shine.
Larry Puls, MD, a gynecologic oncologist at Prisma Health Cancer Institute, has dedicated his life to helping patients with ovarian cancer. “What drew me to cancer work is that you really get to walk a journey with people,” said Dr. Puls, “You’re in it for the long haul.”
What drew Dr. Puls, a husband, father, grandfather, guitarist, and ceramicist, to become an author? To share stories while also supporting his life legacy. His novel “Behind the Second Gate” is set literally behind the physical second gate of a residential community on Kiawah Island, SC. The story’s main character lost his wife to ovarian cancer and is now focusing on moving forward while honoring her memory. The book signing and launch on Sunday, September 12, will
share more on the purpose behind Dr. Puls’s book and offer event-goers the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the book. Advance sales are available by visiting www.BehindTheSecondGate.org.
Proceeds from “Behind the Second Gate” will support cancer patients and research, including the Upstate’s South Carolina Ovarian Cancer Foundation (SCOCF). SCOCF Executive Director Stephanie Henkin states, “This is a book about love, loss, redemption, and the fight that so many ladies who have dealt with ovarian cancer and their families have seen. As a daughter of a woman who lost her life to the disease and one who has watched her father trudge through the processes of caretaker, widower, and overcomer, I applaud Dr. Puls for his willingness to put into words all that come swith this disease.”
“Collaborative survivorship activities like this event align with CSPA’s mission to support all survivors,” says Kay Roper, CSPA Executive Director. “SCOCF and ovarian cancer research will benefit with needed support while the backdrop of the physical Cancer Survivors Park reflects and offers the hope and healing we wish for all survivors.”
CSPA reminds all that the organization defines survivors as patients with the disease, their families, friends, and loved ones who take the cancer journey alongside them as well as when one loses the earthly battle with cancer, those who remain are their survivors, left to carry on the memories, legacies and to celebrate the survivor spirit.
A Novel with a Purpose Celebration – Sunday, September 12 from 1 pm – 3 pm in CSPA’s Center for Hope & Healing
