The Prisma Health Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital Rollin’ Tigers are a group of young athletes ages 5-13 who play in the Southeast Conference of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA). In March 2023, the Rollin’ Tigers won the National Championship game in the junior division of the NWBA National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Wichita, Kansas.
Thanks to community support and team member giving, donations purchased customized equipment and uniforms and covered tournament fees and travel costs for players and their families. The Rollin’ Tigers are the only junior wheelchair basketball team in South Carolina and are fully funded by donations and in-kind coaching managed by Danielle Fitzmorris, an RCP recreational therapist, and coached by Lindsey Metz, a Child Life Specialist with Children’s Hospital, and Jeff Townsend, a lecturer in the Clemson University Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Department.
Thank you to our team members who volunteer their time to lead this special team and team members who donate to continue allowing the Rollin’ Tigers to practice hard, grow the team and defend the National Championship in 2024. With your help, the team can expand and develop a varsity team, as most current players are aging.
Being able to play competitive sports helps engage the kids in an active and healthy lifestyle, which contributes to the prevention of secondary medical conditions common to individuals with a disability.
